I hadn't read the comments before you mentioned them, but you're right, they're interesting. Funny how "gamer" has come to mean something more than just "someone who plays games". I don't play FPSs and I don't own a console, but I'd still classify myself as a gamer - I play RTSs and various strategy games quite bit, among other things. On the other hand, classifying anyone who plays a game as a gamer at least once a month as a gamer seems to be stretching things a bit. Once a month is only twelve times a year...

To me, the tournament story just shows that gaming is still definitely perceived as a masculine activity. No one would dream of running a "Guy Gamer Tournament".
